Review of the Mirra ® Chair
The Mirra ® in a Nutshell
The Herman Miller ® Mirra ® : A Formidable Challenger To the Aeron ® ?
How would you like to sit in a chair that adjusts to you and your movements instead of you having to do all the adjustment? This is certainly not the norm, but it is exactly what the manufacturers of the Mirra ® had in mind.
Let's take a look.
First Impressions Can be Wrong
When I first saw this chair I thought to myself that it had way too little adjustments to make it very comfortable. But as I soon discovered looks can be deceiving. This chair is very comfortable. The fact that the Mirra ® doesn't have the same amount of adjustments as what you may be used to, is exactly what the manufacturers had in mind. They wanted to create a chair that would react and adjust to your movements instead of the other way around.
Intelligent Back support
In my opinion proper back support is the most important feature of any chair and one of the first things to look for.
And there are good reasons for that. I recently read that back issues account for one of the top reasons for work illnesses. At first I found that hard to believe, but after further research I discovered that it is indeed the case. It is actually not that difficult to believe if you consider the amount of time the average person spend sitting.
But I am getting off track. Let's get back to the Mirra's ® back support.
The first thing to know is that your entire back is supported and it is supported by just the right amount. It is also supported while you move (the whole range), not just while you sit still. Key features of the Mirra ® that achieve this are as follows:
- The backrest is made from a flexible, elastic material that has the ability to automatically adjust (I told you it is intelligent) to the shape and contour of your back.
- Certain parts of the backrest are more rigid than other parts. Why is this important? The mobility of your spine varies and the lower area is more mobile than the upper area. The backrest mimics your body and does a good job of it.
- You may have wondered what the purpose of the holes in the backrest is. I sure did. These strategically placed holes allow the backrest to bend with just the right amount no matter whether you are big or small so that your back receives the right amount of support.
Tilt Control
As you would expect from a chair of this quality the amount of backrest tilt can be controlled. But the Mirra ® has taken tilt control further.
Whether you sit in an upright or in a more reclined position the backrest will adjust so that pressure is distributed correctly. And correct pressure distribution means more comfort. The chair also has forward tilt control meaning you still receive back support even when you lean forward to work on your desk.
The Seat
As with the backrest, the seat adjusts itself as soon as you sit and whenever you move. It distributes your weight evenly over the seat so that no pressure points are created. This in turn ensures that there is no restriction in blood flow and thus no discomfort on your part. Another feature, known as the Flexfront seat edge, ensures that the seat is always in contact with the backrest. This feature is important to ensure you receive maximum back support.
This Chair Breathes
Ever experienced a chair that heats up and get wet after a few minutes of sitting? I am sure you did as it is the norm for most chairs. But you will not experience this with the Herman Miller® Mirra® .
For a start no foam is found in the seating. Foam insulates heat and doesn't transfer it away from the body. The materials on the seat and backrest of the Mirra ® have been carefully selected to transfer heat and moisture away from the body and to allow air to flow through it.
The end result? You will not sweat or experience your chair heating up even if you stay in a high temperature area.
What is the difference between the loaded and the basic chair?
The loaded chair has additional features that the basic version does not have namely:
- Adjustable lumbar support
- Adjustable arms
- Adjustable seat depth
And then of course. It is more expensive due to all the extra features. You can expect to pay about USD 200 more for the loaded version.

More Reviews
The majority of reviewers give this chair a very high rating - an average of 4.5 stars or above. Nearly everybody find this chair very comfortable. In fact, many users rate this chair higher than the more expensive Aeron ® . The negative feedback was mainly about price, especially the price difference between the Basic and Fully Loaded Version.
Dont take my word for it. See what others have to say.
Where to Buy
Criteria: Price, reliability and reputation
After searching the internet I found the best price at the following supplier. They are an approved Herman Miller agent so you will get your full twelve year warranty. This is not the case if you buy the chair second hand or from a supplier that is not approved.
CSN Chairs is an approved supplier. I suggest you try them first.
